On September 28, the US Department of Transportation unveiled its final rule concerning vehicle fuel economy standards. Regulatory computations reveal that, in accordance with these updated standards, the average fuel economy for passenger cars and light trucks in the 2031 model year is expected to plummet to approximately 34.9 miles per gallon. This marks a significant decline from the 50.4 miles per gallon that was projected under the regulations set forth in 2024. Furthermore, the new regulations encompass a revision of vehicle classification methods and put an end to the practice of fuel economy credit trading among automakers.
