NIO has officially launched the world’s first zero-carbon, off-grid photovoltaic (PV)-energy storage battery swap station—the Silk Road Xingxingxia NIO Battery Swap Station. Nestled deep within the Gobi Desert in eastern Xinjiang, Xingxingxia suffers from limited grid access, prompting NIO to design a fully self-contained, off-grid PV-energy storage system for the station. By relying solely on solar energy, the system establishes a zero-carbon power cycle that intelligently adjusts its operating mode in response to sunlight availability. This eliminates the need for manual intervention and guarantees reliable performance even in harsh environmental conditions.

The NIO Silk Road battery swap route will be fully accessible starting September 26, stretching 3,605 kilometers and featuring 33 battery swap stations along the way. Travelers will now be able to begin their journey from any NIO battery swap station nationwide and complete their trip with seamless battery swaps across all provincial-level administrative regions in mainland China. Currently, NIO’s battery swap and charging network encompasses 4,109 battery swap stations, 5,301 charging stations, and access to 1.735 million third-party charging points.
