General Motors (GM) has laid out ambitious plans to pioneer next-generation battery technology on American soil, leveraging locally sourced materials. The automaker's Vice President of Batteries and Sustainability has voiced aspirations to establish localized production of energy storage system cells within the next two to three years. Furthermore, GM envisions a future where battery cells for pure electric vehicles are manufactured domestically in the United States. Presently, GM has forged a partnership with U.S.-based startup Peak Energy to co-develop sodium-ion battery cells, a move aimed at diminishing reliance on Chinese materials. The duo anticipates commencing commercial production in 2029, although they will continue to utilize certain Chinese materials in the interim.
