General Motors (GM) is embarking on the development of next-generation battery cells and plans to establish a supply chain, with the expectation of achieving full localized production within two to three years. Kurt Kelty, Vice President of Battery and Sustainability at General Motors, stated that the company's goal is to have domestic battery sources upon market entry. He mentioned that the battery cells will primarily be used in Energy Storage Systems (ESS), which are stationary devices designed for homes and businesses (including data centers). Meanwhile, a company spokesperson emphasized that General Motors also plans to prioritize local production of battery cells for its future all-electric vehicles. Kelty also pointed out that sodium-ion batteries have greater potential than lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
