BMW is ramping up efforts in developing its hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the iX5 Hydrogen. Based on the X5 platform, this model has smoothly transitioned from prototype production to real-world road testing. A market introduction as soon as 2028 is on the cards, although initial availability may be limited to certain regions. Representing the fifth powertrain option in the X5 lineup, the iX5 Hydrogen boasts a brisk 0-100 km/h acceleration time of under 5 seconds, thanks to its front-and-rear dual-motor xDrive all-wheel-drive system. In collaboration with Toyota, BMW has integrated a third-generation fuel cell system into the vehicle. This system is notably 25% more compact than its forerunner. The iX5 Hydrogen is outfitted with seven high-pressure carbon fiber hydrogen tanks, collectively storing up to 7kg of hydrogen. This setup grants the vehicle an impressive WLTP-certified driving range of 750 kilometers. Moreover, refueling the hydrogen tanks is a swift process, taking less than 5 minutes, and all this is achieved without encroaching on the passenger cabin's spaciousness.
