According to a 147-page internal document from Volkswagen, which was acquired by Germany's WirtschaftsWoche, Volkswagen's management board has unanimously given the green light to a phased plan for the gradual closure of four automotive manufacturing plants in Germany. As Bild reported on the 2nd, production operations at the Emden and Zwickau plants will come to a halt in 2031. The Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles plant located in Hanover will cease production in 2032, and the Audi plant in Neckarsulm will stop manufacturing in 2034. The document highlights that, in light of prevailing market trends, Volkswagen Group is currently grappling with an overcapacity issue, exceeding 500,000 vehicles in Europe. Consequently, it is unable to guarantee that these four plants will be allocated competitive production quotas for upcoming vehicle models.
