As reported by Electrek, Tesla initiated the rollout of the FSD v14 Lite version to vehicles equipped with HW3 hardware in late June. After the full-scale deployment on July 21, which involved software version 2026.20.6.11, a substantial number of vehicle owners reported receiving overheating warnings on their Autopilot computers. In some cases, the vehicles even suffered direct hardware failures that necessitated component replacement.

The FSD v14 Lite is a simplified iteration of the HW4's v14 model, optimized to operate on the AI3 chip found in HW3. However, HW3 is limited to just 8GB of memory and has a bandwidth that is roughly one-eighth of HW4's. This disparity causes the larger v14 derivative model to overheat the computer when running on HW3 hardware.

Several owners have shared screenshots of in-car warnings, indicating that the motherboard temperatures have surpassed 90°C, with some real-world readings reaching as high as 96°C. During actual driving scenarios, the FSD system was forcibly terminated, and the vehicle entered a "self-driving unavailable" state until the computer cooled down sufficiently. In more severe instances, the computer crashed entirely, requiring a hardware replacement at a Tesla service center.
