On July 25, the Financial Times unveiled that Waymo, the self-driving car division of Alphabet, is contemplating dissolving its alliance with Uber. With the lobbying rivalry between these two tech behemoths in the robotaxi sector heating up, their relationship has grown increasingly tense. Insiders privy to the situation revealed that Waymo has held internal discussions about discontinuing its cooperative services with Uber in Austin and Atlanta. Uber confirmed that Waymo has informed it of its intention to independently venture into these two markets from January 2028 onwards, as stipulated by their contract. The two entities initially joined forces in 2023, but their partnership has progressively soured due to evolving market dynamics and conflicting lobbying stances on regulatory frameworks governing robotaxis.
