Porsche is currently grappling with formidable challenges. Sales figures for 2024 have witnessed a notable downturn compared to the previous year, 2023, and the first half of 2026 has seen a further 15% year-on-year decrease. The near-term prospects appear to be deteriorating even further. The gasoline-powered (fuel-based) Macan model ceased production this month, with its successor slated to enter the market as early as 2028. Similarly, the 718 series, which was discontinued in October of last year, will only see its new iteration reintroduced in 2027.
To mitigate financial strain, Porsche has announced plans to lay off an additional 5,000 employees, bringing the cumulative total of layoffs to approximately 9,000. Furthermore, the company may implement salary reductions for its staff in exchange for job security extending until 2035. This new wave of layoffs will predominantly target the R&D department. Meanwhile, Porsche aims to enhance its collaboration with Audi to jointly share R&D expenditures.
Additionally, Porsche remains committed to expanding its product portfolio, in line with Volkswagen Group's overarching cost-reduction strategy. At present, Porsche is contending with substantial short-term pressures stemming from the absence of key products and a slump in sales within the Chinese market.
