On July 9, the head of the top U.S. automotive safety regulator stated that the agency would "absolutely" consider abolishing the requirement for driverless cars to be equipped with steering wheels. If implemented, this move would benefit autonomous taxi companies like Tesla that are committed to revolutionizing traditional vehicle designs. Jonathan Morrison, Administrator of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pointed out in an interview with CNBC: "If a vehicle is designed from the outset to not require human driving, then mandating manual control devices makes no sense." Last month, the NHTSA updated federal safety standards, eliminating the requirement for autonomous vehicles to be equipped with manual brake pedals. These changes are part of the Trump administration's efforts to modernize regulations for driverless cars and are expected to pave the way for the promotion of dedicated autonomous vehicles, such as Tesla's Cybercab (a two-seat electric vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals).
