On June 27, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) declared the closure of its engineering analysis investigation concerning the malfunction of the electronic power steering system in the 2023 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. The investigation uncovered a potential hazard: an overvoltage breakdown in the motor drive components located on the printed circuit board of the steering's electronic control unit (ECU) in these vehicle models. Such a breakdown could result in the failure of the electronic power steering, compelling drivers to manually steer the vehicle. In response, Tesla initiated a recall in February 2025. The company resolved the issue by distributing software version 2023.38.4 through Over-The-Air (OTA) technology, with the update progressively reaching affected vehicles starting from October 2023. According to NHTSA's analysis, there was a notable decrease in related complaints after the software update, prompting the decision to terminate the investigation. Nevertheless, the agency will persist in monitoring the efficacy of the recall remedy.
