The U.S. Department of Transportation is pushing to eliminate the requirement for autonomous vehicles to be equipped with brake pedals, a move that could facilitate companies like Tesla and Waymo in deploying more self-driving taxis (Robotaxis). According to a June 25 notice, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed amending the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards to remove the requirement for manually operated brake pedals in vehicles designed for autonomous driving without human driver intervention.
