The German automotive giant, BMW, is stepping on the gas when it comes to the adoption of humanoid robots in vehicle manufacturing. Commencing this summer, BMW's Leipzig plant in Germany is set to officially deploy two humanoid robots named Aeon—developed by Hexagon Robotics—for vehicle production, marking a first for Europe. These robots are currently in the testing phase. The Aeon robot, standing at a height of approximately 1.65 meters and weighing 60 kilograms, boasts a maximum moving speed of 2.4 meters per second. It is outfitted with 21 sensors, operates on a wheeled mobile chassis, has a battery life spanning roughly 3 hours, and is capable of automatically swapping batteries. Initially, these robots will be primarily tasked with repetitive duties such as component delivery and battery assembly, with the goal of boosting efficiency and mitigating labor shortages, rather than displacing human workers. BMW has already trialed similar robots in its US factories, yielding promising outcomes.
