On May 30, Cui Dongshu, the Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), published an article revealing that in 2025, global auto sales soared to 96.89 million units, reflecting a year-on-year surge of 6%. In April 2026 alone, worldwide auto sales climbed to 7.99 million units, a 4% increase compared to the same period the previous year. Cumulative sales from January to April 2026 reached 30.96 million units, marking a modest 1% year-on-year rise.
The global auto sales growth remained sluggish during the first four months of 2026, largely due to the negative growth observed in both the U.S. and Chinese auto markets at the start of the year. In 2025, China's slice of the global auto market pie was a substantial 35.4%. However, this figure dipped to 30.9% in early 2026, a decline primarily attributed to the impact of the Spring Festival, a significant cultural event in China that often disrupts normal business activities.
Nevertheless, as the effects of policy stimulus measures become increasingly apparent, the Chinese auto market is poised for a gradual recovery in the latter half of the year.
