On May 28, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology convened the second session of the national task force dedicated to the recycling and reuse of power batteries for new energy vehicles. The meeting underscored the importance of standardizing the recycling and reuse processes for spent power batteries through legal frameworks and enforcing strict investigations and penalties for violations. These violations include unauthorized sales, illicit dismantling, and unlicensed operations, all of which will be addressed in accordance with the law. Presently, China's new energy vehicle power batteries are entering a phase of large-scale retirement, with the volume of spent power batteries projected to surpass 1 million tons by 2030. This underscores the urgent need to establish a robust recycling and reuse system. During the meeting, proposals were made to expedite the creation of a long-term mechanism, and key tasks for 2026 were outlined. These tasks encompass enhancing the coordination of regulations and policies, initiating special joint enforcement actions, reinforcing corporate responsibility, promoting digital traceability monitoring, fostering collaborative efforts across the industrial chain, and advancing the research, development, and application of cutting-edge technologies.
