Ever since Xiaomi Auto made its market entrance, it has found itself entangled in its first-ever patent dispute. Shandong Yanlu New Energy Vehicle Industry took the initiative by filing three requests to invalidate crucial design patents pertaining to two of Xiaomi's models, namely the SU7 and YU7. This action might well be a 'preemptive' tactic aimed at steering clear of any potential infringement lawsuits that Xiaomi could launch in the future. On March 25, the two sides came to a settlement agreement, and so far, Xiaomi has chosen to remain tight-lipped about the whole affair, making no public statements. Even though the dispute has been settled for the time being, industry analysts are quick to point out that as Xiaomi Auto lays out its plans to venture into international markets by 2027, it is highly likely to encounter even more intricate intellectual property challenges during its globalization journey. The patent litigation that BYD faced in Europe serves as a stark reminder and a cautionary tale in this regard.
