By the close of 2025, WeRide and Pony.ai, often hailed as the "twin luminaries" in the autonomous driving arena, have both unveiled their financial performance. WeRide's total revenue for 2025 soared to RMB 685 million, marking an impressive 89.6% year-on-year surge. Despite incurring a net loss of RMB 1.7 billion, the company has attained profitability on a per-vehicle basis overseas, a feat attributed to enhanced remote human operational efficiency and substantial cost savings in vehicle production. Pony.ai, on the other hand, reported revenue nearing RMB 629 million, reflecting a robust 20.0% year-on-year growth, with its net loss significantly reduced to USD 76.8 million. Moreover, Pony.ai has achieved profitability on a per-vehicle basis in terms of unit economics (UE) in China's first-tier cities. Presently, the Robotaxi sector is embroiled in fierce competition, giving rise to four dominant factions: firstly, firms equipped with L4 autonomous driving technology, exemplified by WeRide and Pony.ai; secondly, internet behemoths propelled by a fusion of 'technology and traffic'; thirdly, mobility service platforms leveraging their strengths in traffic flow and data analytics; and fourthly, OEM vehicle manufacturers combining 'manufacturing prowess with technological innovation'. Profitability now serves as merely a prerequisite, as the Robotaxi industry stands on the cusp of a new era where 'scale reigns supreme'.
