On February 14, informed sources revealed that Chinese automotive giants BYD and Geely have been shortlisted as final contenders for the acquisition of the Nissan-Mercedes-Benz factory situated in Mexico. Previously, this Mexican factory had encountered shutdowns and a surge in layoffs, largely due to the impact of U.S. tariff policies. In light of these challenges, China has been vigorously pursuing the establishment of manufacturing bases in Mexico.
The factory, located in Guanajuato, Mexico, is a key production hub for models like the Mercedes-Benz GLB and Nissan Sentra. It not only possesses well-developed production capabilities and a robust supply chain but also enjoys substantial geographical benefits. These advantages enable it to efficiently cater to both the North American and South American markets, making it a highly sought-after asset and likely one of the primary reasons Chinese automakers are vying for its acquisition.
