Hyundai has recently made it clear that it is gearing up to face off against Chinese automakers in the European market. The company has pledged to independently adhere to the EU's stringent emissions regulations, steadfastly refusing to buy carbon credits from its competitors. Xavier Martinet, the head of Hyundai Europe, emphasized that purchasing carbon credits is not only a costly endeavor but also inadvertently benefits rivals. Under EU regulations, beginning in 2025, automakers must reduce the average carbon emissions of their newly sold vehicles by 15% compared to 2021 levels. Specifically, new passenger cars are required to achieve an average emissions level of 93.6 grams per kilometer, with hefty fines imposed for any exceedance of these limits. To sidestep these penalties, Hyundai has outlined a strategy to introduce five pure electric and hybrid models within the next 18 months. This move is aimed at solidifying and maintaining its 8% market share in both the EU and the UK.
