According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple is planning to allow voice-controlled artificial intelligence applications from other companies to integrate with its CarPlay system, enabling users to interact with AI chatbots through the in-car interface for the first time. Apple will provide support for applications within the CarPlay system in the coming months. Previously, CarPlay only permitted the use of its own Siri assistant as a voice control option. With the implementation of the new initiative, AI providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic PBC, and Google will be able to release CarPlay versions of their applications that support voice control. However, Apple will not allow users to replace the Siri button or wake word on CarPlay; users will need to open the relevant applications to activate third-party voice control features.
