Audi's CEO, Gernot Döllner, has conceded that the decision to rename the A4 as the A5 was a strategic misstep and suggested that the A4 moniker could be reinstated in forthcoming model updates. In 2023, Audi rolled out a new naming scheme, aiming to differentiate between combustion-engine and electric vehicles by using odd and even numbers. However, this approach led to widespread market confusion, resulting in a surge of inquiries from dealers and complicating consumers' understanding of the model hierarchy. Moreover, the new A5 designation clashed with the existing coupe model also named A5, while the A6L's name remained consistent in the Chinese market, hindering the establishment of a cohesive global naming strategy. Additionally, Audi's shift towards electrification has not met expectations, with global sales experiencing a downturn in 2024 and electric vehicle sales seeing a year-on-year decline. The new CEO has already distanced himself from the aggressive electrification strategy pursued by his predecessor. Presently, Audi has opted to revert to its traditional naming system, though the specific naming approach for the upcoming Audi A5L has yet to be determined.
