The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has declared that it will initiate an investigation into an incident involving a Waymo self-driving car. On January 23, in the vicinity of an elementary school in Santa Monica, California, a child abruptly darted out from behind a double-parked SUV and was hit by a Waymo autonomous vehicle, sustaining minor injuries.
The NHTSA is carrying out a preliminary assessment to determine whether the vehicle implemented suitable and prudent actions when encountering potential vulnerable road users, like young pedestrians, during the school's pick-up and drop-off hours. Furthermore, the NHTSA intends to scrutinize Waymo's anticipated conduct in and around school areas. This includes checking whether the vehicle adhered to speed limit signs. It will also look into Waymo's post-accident response strategies.
