The latest research conducted by Lloyd's Register reveals a concerning trend in maritime safety: modern vessels, particularly cruise ships, are now equipped with an excessive array of digital alarm systems on the bridge. This proliferation has led to a phenomenon known as "alarm fatigue," where crew members find it increasingly challenging to focus on their watchkeeping duties. Consequently, this has objectively heightened the risk of accidents at sea.

According to the study, the number of alarms on the bridge has surged by 197% over the past two decades. This alarm overload has left watchkeepers feeling overwhelmed, often rendering them unable to promptly respond to critical alarms. Such a situation poses a significant safety hazard, underscoring the urgent need for a more streamlined and effective alarm management system in the maritime industry.
