On January 22, 2026, during the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland, Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, made a groundbreaking announcement. He revealed that Tesla intends to make its humanoid robot, Optimus, available for public purchase by the end of December 2027. Currently, Optimus is already hard at work in Tesla's factories, undertaking straightforward tasks like material handling. Musk further shared that by the close of 2026, Optimus will be equipped to handle more intricate tasks.
In terms of production, Tesla has revised its projections for Optimus. In 2025, the company anticipates manufacturing several thousand to ten thousand units. Looking ahead to 2026, the expected production capacity is set to soar to between 50,000 and 100,000 units. And by 2027, the production volume is projected to skyrocket even further, reaching anywhere from 500,000 to 1 million units.
Musk placed significant emphasis on the fact that the commercialization of Optimus will serve as a catalyst, speeding up the development of embodied intelligence. Moreover, it will usher human-robot collaboration into an entirely new and exciting era.
