By 2025, it is anticipated that the global sales of Chinese automakers will soar to around 27 million vehicles. This figure will mark the first time that Chinese automakers surpass Japanese automakers, whose sales are projected to be just shy of 25 million, thus securing the top spot globally. These statistics encompass both domestic and international sales of passenger and commercial vehicles. Nearly 70% of Chinese auto sales stem from the domestic market, with electric and hybrid models constituting nearly 60% of domestic passenger vehicle sales. According to data from the China Passenger Car Association, in 2025, retail sales of passenger cars nationwide reached 23.744 million units, while wholesale sales soared to 29.554 million units. New energy vehicles have emerged as the primary growth driver, with both wholesale and retail sales witnessing year-on-year increases, and the retail penetration rate hitting 54%. In December alone, the retail penetration rate of the new energy vehicle market further surged to 59.1%. Analyses indicate that the first-mover advantage enjoyed by Chinese brands in terms of intelligence and electrification has translated into robust global competitiveness, with exports steadily on the rise. In contrast, Japanese automakers continue to rely heavily on fuel-powered vehicles, experiencing a delayed transition to electrification, which has consequently led to a decline in their global market share.
