On January 14, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, made an announcement stating that, effective February 14, 2026, Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system will no longer be available for purchase under the buyout scheme. Instead, it will transition entirely to a monthly subscription model. In the past, the buyout price for FSD in the U.S. market stood at $8,000, while subscription fees ranged from $99 to $199 per month. In the Chinese market, the buyout price was set at RMB 64,000, and a subscription service had not been introduced at that time. Tesla's decision is aimed at reducing the barriers for users to experience the FSD system, boosting market penetration, and ensuring a steady stream of cash flow through the subscription model. Furthermore, Musk's compensation package, which is valued at a staggering $1 trillion, includes a target of achieving 10 million active FSD subscriptions. This strategic move by Tesla could very well be linked to fulfilling that ambitious goal.
