On January 11, the official website of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government shared a video that showcases the advancements in autonomous vehicle testing. The Hong Kong Transport Department has granted six pilot licenses for autonomous vehicles, enabling 62 autonomous private cars and minibuses to conduct tests across various regions. The first tech firm to secure a license has logged over 80,000 kilometers of safe driving. Starting from last month, this company has been carrying out cross-district tests in Kwun Tong and Kowloon City. The test results indicate that in bustling urban settings with heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic, autonomous vehicles can leverage cutting-edge algorithms to maintain steady driving, activate lights, and dodge obstacles at precisely the right moments. They are also capable of executing maneuvers such as lane changes and U-turns, all while operating seamlessly. At present, during testing, a driver remains in the vehicle as a backup operator. There's no need for the driver to control the steering wheel; they only intervene when absolutely necessary. The Transport Department intends to gradually roll out driverless testing throughout the year, ultimately transitioning to a setup where only remote backup operators are present.
