On December 3, a report from Cailianshe disclosed that according to industry insiders, the Trump administration has put forward a proposal to substantially loosen the fuel economy standards that were established by former President Biden the previous year. This move aims to assist U.S. automakers in boosting the sales of their gasoline-powered vehicles. It is anticipated that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will recommend a significant cut in the fuel economy requirements for vehicles produced during the model years 2022 to 2031. Specifically, it will mandate an average fuel efficiency of 34.5 miles per gallon by 2031, a notable decrease from the prior requirement of 50.4 miles per gallon. Trump is slated to unveil this plan at a White House event scheduled for Wednesday (Eastern Time). The event will also see the presence of representatives from the top executives of the three major U.S. automakers. Since assuming office, Trump has rolled out a series of policies aimed at undoing the Biden administration's initiatives to curb carbon emissions. These include, among others, the repeal of tax credits for electric vehicles.
