Tesla has entered into a confidential settlement agreement to settle a lawsuit stemming from a fatal accident. In this tragic incident, a teenager lost his life while the Autopilot system was active in a Model 3. The case, which was initially set to go to trial in just a month, has now bypassed a jury trial as a result of this settlement.
The accident occurred when Benjamin Maldonado was in the process of changing lanes. At that moment, his vehicle was hit by a Tesla Model 3 with its Autopilot system engaged, leading to the untimely death of his son, Giovanni.
It's worth noting that Tesla has previously chosen to settle in several other fatal accidents involving the Autopilot feature. In 2023, the company emerged victorious in two lawsuits in California. However, in July of the same year, a federal jury in Miami found Tesla liable for a fatal accident and ordered the company to pay $200 million in punitive damages. Tesla is currently in the process of contesting this ruling.
