On Wednesday, Christophe Périllat, the CEO of Valeo—a prominent French automotive component supplier—expressed that instituting 'minimum European local content standards' for vehicles sold within the European Union (EU) is vital for preserving the EU automotive industry's competitive edge. At present, the EU automotive sector is grappling with substantial expenses linked to the shift toward electric vehicles, intense rivalry from China, and ambiguity regarding tariff regulations. In light of these challenges, Périllat put forward the idea of establishing an 80% quota for components sourced from within the EU. He emphasized that such measures could bolster European autonomy and safeguard the industry's competitiveness.
