On September 2, the Indian Tax Council unveiled a proposal to substantially hike the consumption tax on luxury electric vehicles. The proposal entails raising the tax rate on electric vehicles priced between ₹2 million and ₹4 million (approximately $22,700 to $45,400) from 5% to 18%, and imposing an even higher tax on models priced above $46,000. This initiative is specifically aimed at electric vehicles catering primarily to the 'high-end' segment of society. The proposal is now under review by the Indian Goods and Services Tax Council.
