On August 21, it was reported that the United States' National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has commenced an investigation into Tesla for allegedly failing to promptly report accidents involving its autonomous driving technology. According to NHTSA documents, several accident reports submitted by Tesla were delayed by "months or more" following the incidents. Regulations mandate that companies must submit such reports within one to five days of being notified of an accident. The NHTSA attributed these delays to issues with Tesla's data collection processes, which Tesla has since indicated have been rectified. The agency's Office of Defects Investigation has now launched an audit to ascertain the root causes of the delays and to evaluate potential preventive measures.
