The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has formally alerted TP-Link Systems that certain of its Wi-Fi routers are exhibiting power exceedance problems. After preliminary assessment, the FCC has concluded that TP-Link's equipment certification applications for four router models contain misleading or imprecise information. Notably, three of these models were found to surpass the designated power usage limits during rigorous testing procedures.

The FCC has mandated TP-Link to furnish a comprehensive, evidence-supported response by October 30. This response will subsequently undergo scrutiny by the FCC's national security division. Some experts speculate that this development could potentially culminate in the FCC imposing a ban on TP-Link's devices.

In response, TP-Link has affirmed its commitment to scrutinizing the data pertaining to the implicated routers, conducting retests if deemed necessary, and implementing corrective measures should any issues be identified. The company contends that the alleged power violations represent sporadic anomalies, emphasizing that the four affected products constitute less than 0.33% of its total US sales projected for 2026.

Presently, TP-Link is grappling with investigations initiated by multiple US government departments and is embroiled in lawsuits across several states. These legal actions encompass concerns related to national security and antitrust violations. In 2024, TP-Link underwent a strategic split into two distinct entities, one based in the US and the other in China. However, subsequent investigations have unveiled that its US subsidiary continues to maintain substantial business operations within China.

Prior to the split, TP-Link held the distinction of being the world's preeminent supplier of consumer-grade Wi-Fi devices, with its products enjoying widespread distribution in the US market. Should TP-Link falter in addressing the FCC's inquiries, it risks facing a cessation of sales for its older router models. It is crucial to note that routers operating beyond the stipulated power limits have the potential to disrupt the functionality of other electronic devices.
