Qualcomm’s latest flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, has recently found itself at the center of a heated debate. Earlier reports from South Korean media revealed that the chip encountered overheating problems during Samsung’s internal testing, consistently surpassing temperature limits under prolonged high-performance workloads, which resulted in noticeable performance throttling. In light of these issues, Samsung is reportedly considering replacing the Snapdragon chip with its proprietary Exynos 2700 for the upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra.

In response to these allegations, Qualcomm has firmly denied the claims. The company’s Chief Marketing Officer emphasized that the reports were misleading and reiterated Qualcomm’s commitment to collaborating closely with smartphone makers to deliver an optimal user experience. Meanwhile, Qualcomm has also announced a round of global layoffs, framing the decision as part of its broader strategy to cultivate a more performance-driven corporate culture.

While the timing of these two developments—the overheating controversy and the workforce reduction—has prompted external speculation about the state of Qualcomm’s flagship chip development and the health of its smartphone business, no concrete evidence currently links the layoffs to the overheating rumors.
