Following the release of Apple’s inaugural foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, a number of screen-related malfunctions have surfaced. Customers have reported the emergence of bright lines and cracks along the screen's hinge shortly after unboxing or following brief usage. Notably, most of these malfunctions have occurred without any apparent signs of impact or pinching, indicating potential issues stemming from assembly tolerances. As of now, Apple has refrained from issuing a public statement but has assured that devices experiencing non-user-induced malfunctions are eligible for replacement. However, the repair costs for user-induced damages outside the warranty period are notably high.
Legal experts highlight that consumers are entitled to protection under the 'Three Guarantees' policy (which generally refers to the right to repair, replacement, or refund for products with quality issues in China). Merchants are required to shoulder the burden of proof if they allege that the damage was caused by the user. It is also emphasized that AppleCare+ does not absolve Apple of its fundamental responsibility for product quality.
The iPhone Duo made its debut in September, with prices in China spanning from 15,999 to 26,499 yuan. Presently, orders are being accepted with shipping dates extending until late January 2027. Initially, the device encountered challenges due to the lack of adaptation for foldable screens among most mainstream apps. However, WeChat has since successfully adapted its app for the new format.
