In an antitrust lawsuit, Apple and the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ), in conjunction with several states, have hit a snag regarding the extent of document retrieval. On October 21, they jointly informed the New Jersey Federal Court that negotiations had hit an impasse. Initially, both sides had agreed on a document submission deadline of June 20, 2025. However, with the fact-finding period now extended until late May 2027, the DoJ has asked Apple to update its documents up to 30 days prior to the investigation's conclusion.
Apple is staunchly against a full-scale recollection of evidence. The tech giant has highlighted that it has already meticulously reviewed over 11 million documents and submitted more than 2 million. It argues that supplementing materials for an additional nearly 22 months would not only take several months but could also prompt a fresh round of witness questioning, thereby further prolonging the lawsuit. Apple has, however, indicated its openness to considering targeted supplementary requests, showing a willingness to cooperate in a more focused manner.
