Japanese electronic component manufacturer TDK has unveiled, for the first time, a technology that applies meta-optical lenses to achieve direct retinal projection display in smart glasses. This technology embeds a planar lens with a thickness of only 150 nanometers into the glasses. By utilizing nano-scale reflective structures to alter the direction of laser reflection, it projects images onto the wearer's retina, replacing the bulkier convex lenses and curved mirrors used in traditional direct projection systems. TDK stated that this is the world's first implementation of retinal direct projection display in smart glasses using meta-optical lenses.
