Apple has rolled out the Apple Reference Image feature for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. This feature operates as an optional mode, offering hardware-based verification at the moment of capture and attaching a timestamp. Leveraging SEP to sign crucial metadata, encrypted timestamp services, and a secure private cloud verification chain, it guarantees the integrity of the entire process while safeguarding user privacy. This functionality is particularly valuable in situations demanding reliable image sources, such as news reporting and evidence collection. In contrast to conventional post-capture metadata evidence systems, it provides a higher level of trustworthiness, enables pixel-level annotation of genuine image data, and serves as an effective tool against AI-generated fake images.
