During the pre-sale phase of the iPhone 18, numerous netizens in Hong Kong reported that their credit cards, issued by banks including HSBC, Hang Seng, and Standard Chartered, were suspected of being fraudulently used to purchase the device. Amounts ranging from HK$10,000 to tens of thousands were deducted from their accounts without requiring two-factor authentication. Between September 12 and 13, the Hong Kong police received reports from more than 700 individuals, with the total amount involved reaching approximately HK$14.7 million. The largest single case reported was for HK$114,000. These cases have been provisionally classified as 'obtaining property by deception,' and no arrests have been made to date. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority urges cardholders to carefully review their transaction records and immediately inform their banks to block their cards if any fraudulent transactions are identified. Cardholders will not be held liable for unauthorized transactions, provided they have not engaged in fraudulent activities or exhibited gross negligence.
