Hackers have successfully exploited a vulnerability within the Coldcard Bitcoin cold wallet software, a product developed by the Canadian firm Coinkite Inc. The flaw stems from an issue in the implementation of the random number generator, rendering the generation of mnemonic phrases predictable. This predictability has enabled attackers to deduce private keys and subsequently pilfer Bitcoin. As of Monday, approximately 5,000 wallets have fallen victim to this security breach, resulting in the theft of over 1,755 Bitcoins (valued at roughly $110 million), with some users witnessing their assets being swiftly depleted. This incident has effectively dismantled the long-held belief that cold wallets offer absolute security when kept offline.
