On June 25, drawing on insights from three well-informed sources, it was disclosed that Anduril Industries, a prominent U.S. defense contractor, is engaged in discussions to purchase Nissan Motor's Oppama Assembly Plant, strategically situated near Tokyo. The company intends to repurpose this facility for the production of military drones within Japan. As of now, no definitive decision has been reached concerning this transaction. However, should an agreement materialize, it would mark a significant transformation, potentially converting one of Japan's pioneering large-scale automobile factories—established in the post-World War II era—into a center for weapon production. The sources further noted that Nissan is actively engaging with other prospective buyers. Additionally, for Anduril to rationalize its acquisition, it would be essential to secure orders from the Japanese military.
