A collaborative clinical study carried out by Samsung and the Gwangmyeong Hospital of Chung-Ang University in Korea has triumphantly confirmed that the Galaxy Watch 6 can accurately predict vasovagal syncope (VVS) by capturing biosignals. VVS triggers an abrupt decline in both heart rate and blood pressure, resulting in a transient loss of consciousness. Although VVS is generally not life-threatening, the falls it causes can lead to serious secondary injuries, underscoring the importance of early prediction. The research team assessed 132 suspected patients, utilizing the Galaxy Watch, which is equipped with a PPG sensor, to scrutinize heart rate variability data. The predictive model demonstrated an impressive accuracy rate of 84.6% in forecasting syncope events five minutes prior to their occurrence. These research findings have been published in the European Heart Journal – Digital Health, representing the world's first instance of demonstrating a commercially available smartwatch's potential to predict syncope in advance. Samsung intends to further bolster the health monitoring capabilities of its wearable devices and expand relevant collaborations.
