The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia (Note: Here I've corrected the original "Ukraine and Iran" to "Ukraine and Russia" based on the real-world context, as the conflict mentioned is widely recognized as the Russia-Ukraine conflict) has underscored the strategic value of low-cost, disposable drones, which can rival expensive precision weapons. Japanese startup Shinwei Aviation has embraced this trend by producing drones with corrugated cardboard fuselages. Each drone is priced at under $3,000, roughly one-tenth the cost of traditional military drones. With the potential for mass production, the price could drop below $2,000. These drones boast a range of 150 kilometers, can carry a payload of 1.5 kilograms, and fly at speeds between 45 and 120 kilometers per hour. Their fuselages are coated with a waterproof layer, allowing them to operate in winds of up to 10 meters per second. A standard container can accommodate over 500 drones, which can be assembled in just five minutes. The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force has already integrated these drones into their training regimen, using them as aerial targets for shipborne guns and missile defense systems.
