As reported by ComputerBase, a fresh batch of fake Samsung 990 Pro SSDs has made its way back into the European market in April 2026, marking the second counterfeit incident for this particular model, following a similar case in Japan. In early April, a consumer bought two units of this SSD model from an Austrian online retailer. The external packaging bore a striking resemblance to the genuine article, but closer inspection revealed inferior printing quality and a misaligned CE logo on the reverse side. Upon opening the drives, it was discovered that the counterfeits utilized a blue PCB board, in stark contrast to the black PCB board used in authentic products. When connected to a computer, while some software could detect them, the storage capacity and firmware ID failed to match those of genuine products. Samsung's official tool, Samsung Magician, clearly identified them as 'non-Samsung products.' Unlike the previously uncovered fakes in Japan, which at least retained basic functionality, these counterfeit SSDs were entirely non-functional. The Austrian retailer has stated that they will launch an investigation into their supply chain, although the exact route through which these fake products infiltrated the market remains a mystery.
