On March 23, Liu Jingkang, the founder of Insta360, addressed the patent dispute lawsuit initiated by DJI. He clarified that the patents at the heart of the controversy were original creations developed by Insta360 staff during their tenure with the company. Earlier, DJI had filed a lawsuit, asserting its ownership over six patents linked to domains such as drone flight control. Insta360 further explained that the use of the term 'request to withhold name' was a precautionary measure to avoid drawing unwanted attention from headhunters.
The patent disagreement between the two entities is deeply intertwined with their strategic market moves. DJI has ambitions to penetrate the panoramic camera market by 2025, while Insta360, concurrently, is setting its sights on the consumer drone sector. Insta360 mentioned that certain products from DJI might infringe upon its patent rights, but for now, it prefers to channel its energies into research and development rather than initiate legal proceedings. Notably, Insta360 has previously triumphed in a 337 investigation case against GoPro. In light of DJI's current lawsuit, Insta360 has expressed its intent to handle the situation calmly and will resort to patent litigation as a countermeasure if the need arises.
