Joby Aviation announced on Wednesday that its first mass-produced electric air taxi has commenced test flights and will undergo Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) certification testing by U.S. federal regulators, a crucial step for the aircraft to obtain commercial operation certification. Pilots have initiated preliminary testing at the Marina base in California, with these test flights laying the groundwork for the FAA's assessment later this year. Joby has been collaborating with regulatory agencies for years to secure approvals for the design, plans, and components of the aircraft. The aircraft features a six-rotor electric design capable of vertical takeoff and landing as well as horizontal flight, with an interior that can accommodate one pilot and four passengers. Joby plans to launch operations in Dubai later this year and conduct limited operations in the United States.
