Meta has put on hold its plan to allow third-party device makers access to its mixed reality operating system, Meta Horizon OS. Originally, this initiative was a cornerstone of Meta's metaverse strategy, envisioned to offer users a wider array of device choices through the creation of "next-generation hardware products." A spokesperson for the company mentioned that their current focus is on crafting premium first-party software and hardware offerings, with plans to revisit potential collaborations down the line. In April of the previous year, Meta unveiled its intention to open up the system, prompting companies like ASUS, Microsoft Xbox, and Lenovo to embark on developing related hardware. However, information regarding the public progress of these endeavors has been scarce.
Meta Horizon OS is crafted to deliver an immersive mixed reality experience, facilitating interactions that emphasize social presence. Yet, with artificial intelligence emerging as Meta's new strategic priority, the company's emphasis on the metaverse has waned. The metaverse project team within Meta's Reality Labs division might encounter budget reductions, as some funds previously earmarked for the metaverse are being reallocated towards artificial intelligence glasses and other wearable tech.
