Attorneys general from various regions across the United States have banded together to file a lawsuit against Meta. They accuse the company's Facebook and Instagram platforms of unlawfully gathering data from users under 13 years old, as well as crafting addictive features that take a toll on children's mental well - being.
As stated in the lawsuit documents, once Meta uncovered evidence indicating that its products had negative repercussions on users' mental health, it still knowingly declined to shut down the vast majority of underage user accounts and persisted in collecting data. Moreover, there are suspicions that Meta played down the prevalence of harmful content on its platforms.
The lawsuit aims to secure a court order that would put a stop to Meta's illegal activities and also demands financial compensation.
