On September 13, 2025 (local time), the Trump administration unveiled a groundbreaking pilot program designed to hasten the rollout of "air taxis," also known as eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft). Spearheaded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), this initiative will encompass a minimum of five demonstration projects. These projects will be collaborative efforts between state and local governments and private enterprises, with the overarching objective of fostering the safe and efficient operation of eVTOLs. U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy, emphasized that this endeavor will not only cement America's preeminence in global transportation innovation but also generate a plethora of high-paying manufacturing positions and foster extensive economic prospects.

Industry players such as Joby Aviation lauded the decision, noting that it clears the path for the expansion of commercial services on a larger scale. Presently, air taxi firms are in a fierce competition to obtain regulatory clearances, driven by the burgeoning demand for swifter and more eco-friendly urban transit solutions. eVTOLs, with their ability to take off and land vertically, offer a viable means for commuters to circumvent the snarls of ground traffic.

Concurrently, several nations, including India and the UAE, are also ramping up their eVTOL deployment efforts, with aspirations to commence ferrying fare-paying passengers as early as the following year.
