Eagle-eyed journalists have unearthed a hidden gem in the iPhone Air: its single lens packs a complete 'Portrait Mode' shooting feature, a pioneering move for the iPhone lineup. Casting our minds back, Apple initially rolled out Portrait Mode for single-lens rear cameras with the iPhone XR in 2018. However, this early iteration had its constraints. It was confined to snapping portraits of people and pets, falling short when it came to applying Portrait Mode to objects such as flowers or landscapes to emphasize the main subject. Later on, the budget-friendly iPhone SE series, launched in 2020 and 2022, along with the iPhone 16e, which hit the shelves in February this year, all carried forward this limitation. Nevertheless, the freshly launched iPhone Air has broken new ground by enabling a full-fledged Portrait Mode on a single lens. This includes photographing any subject, manipulating depth of field, fine-tuning focus, and much more. Moreover, when capturing standard photos, the camera can automatically gather depth of field data, allowing for post-shooting adjustments even if Portrait Mode wasn't activated during the shoot. The Portrait photos taken with the iPhone Air also leverage HDR technology, unveiling richer details in both highlights and shadows, while also boosting shooting performance in dimly lit settings.
